Today, I’ll walk you through 5 ridiculously simple rules that helped me (and many others) start saving money without feeling miserable.
1. Pay Yourself First
This was the game changer for me.
Every time your paycheck comes in, the first thing you should do is move a portion — even just $50 — into a separate savings account.
Not after bills. Not after shopping. First thing.
Saving needs to become a non-negotiable, like rent or groceries.
2. Know Where Your Money Is Going
If you don’t track it, you can’t fix it.
Take 5 minutes every night to check where you spent your money today.
It sounds tedious, but trust me, seeing that $4 coffee or random Amazon buys add up will change how you spend.
3. Set One Clear Goal
Saving “just because” feels pointless.
Saving for “3 months of emergency expenses” or “a trip to Europe next year” feels exciting.
Pick one goal and remind yourself why you’re saving whenever you get tempted to splurge.
4. Automate Everything
Set up automatic transfers to your savings account and autopay for your bills.
Automation removes temptation.
When it’s not in your checking account, you’re way less likely to touch it.
5. Reward Yourself (Wisely)
Saving doesn’t mean living like a monk.
Set small milestones (like saving your first $500) and celebrate — just not by blowing the money you saved!
A coffee date, a movie night, or a homemade pizza party works just fine.
Final Thoughts
Starting to save money isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about building momentum — small wins, stacked up over time.
If you can follow even two or three of these rules, your future self will be seriously thankful.
